2. Types of Competitive Advantage
a. Comparative Advantage
- Efficiency: A company possesses a comparative advantage when it can produce something more efficiently than its rivals. This efficiency leads to greater profit margins.
- Think of it as being able to create the same product or service as your competitor but using fewer ingredients less energy and less time.
b. Differential Advantage
- Uniqueness and Quality: A differential advantage arises when a company’s products or services are both unique and of higher quality relative to those of a competitor.
- Examples include cutting-edge technology, patent-protected products, superior personnel, and a strong brand identity.
- Apple, with its innovative products like the iPhone with a clever marketing campaigns, is a great example of differential advantage.
- Major drug companies can market branded drugs at high prices due to patent protection. Like Neurophen compared to ordinary Ibuprofen.
3. Building a Competitive Advantage
To create a competitive advantage, companies can adopt three main methods:
a. Cost Leadership
- Lowest Price: Offer products or services at the lowest price in the market.
- Beware: Slashing prices too much risks decreasing profit margins.
- Beware there is always someone who is prepared to undercut your price in a race to the bottom.
b. Differentiation
- Quality and Uniqueness: Provide offerings that are superior in quality, service, or features.
- Apple’s elite brand and unique products are a great example.
c. Specialisation
- Narrow Focus: Tailor offerings to a focused market.
- Specialisation allows companies to excel in a specific niche.
4. Summary
