Quote for the Day
Do not judge me by my successes but judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again – Nelson Mandela
The Secret to Building Resilience
Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It’s often described as the difference between successful and unsuccessful people. But what exactly enables resilience?
Conventional thinking assumes that resilience is something we find within ourselves only when we are tested—a kind of solitary internal “grit” that allows strong individuals to bounce back. However, new research reveals a more nuanced perspective.
Resilience isn’t just about individual toughness. It’s heavily enabled by strong relationships and networks. These connections serve as a toolbox we can turn to during difficult times. They help us navigate day-to-day challenges and provide emotional support.
We can nurture and build our resilience through a wide variety of interactions with people in our personal and professional lives. These interactions can alter the magnitude of the challenge we’re facing.
Crystalise the meaningful purpose in what we’re doing.
Help us see a path forward to overcome setbacks.
An example of this is an anaesthetist during the Covid-19 pandemic. He faced immense stress. His team worked tirelessly in an overwhelmed hospital. His burden was crushing, yet he didn’t break. Resilience allowed him to endure. His relationships and teamwork played a crucial role.
Our resilience needs are personal, shaped by our unique history, personality, and professional context. But collectively, the relationships we develop serve as a toolbox we can rely upon during our most difficult times.
Are your relationships broad and deep enough to help support you when you hit setbacks?
According to Harvard Business Review Resilience is not just about individual strength; it’s about the connections we foster.
We should seek to build our personal resilience through meaningful relationships.
