Organisational Culture and Performance
I was doing some research into how culture affects performance and saw the opportunity to build a workshop around the findings, so my June Coaching Group looked at the question – How can we use organisational culture to improve results?
According to Richard Perrin “Organisational culture is the sum of values and rituals which serve as glue to integrate the members of the organisation”
According to Joe Wedgwood there are seven key characteristics of Organisational culture:
- Innovation – it’s safe to fail
- Attention to detail
- Outcome focused
- People and Leaders – the second P&L
- Teamwork (Trust)
- Aggressiveness about competition
- Stability
Each attendee completed a diagnostic to determine the health of their organisation. The average score was 17 out of 28 with a high of 26 and a low of 8
We then looked at the gaps to see what they could do to improve their organisational culture
To be successful an organisation needs to be good at the business basics of Strategy, Marketing, Finance and Operations including Technology, but it also needs to avoid Dysfunctional Behaviour, Ego and Politics
We then went on to answer these six key questions:
- Why do we exist as a business? – The hardest question
- How do we behave?
- What do we do?
- How will we know we have succeeded?
- What is most important to do right now?
- Who must do it?
An oxygen cylinder delivery company discovered their purpose as “Enhancing Lives” what is your businesses purpose?
My challenge to you is what can you do in the next ninety days to improve your culture and hence your performance?
