Ideas for Success – November / December 2021

Quote for the Day

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them”

Albert Einstein

Customer Centered Innovation

As we have grappled with Covid, we have had to innovate the way we do business. As we make our plans for the future, what does innovation mean for you?

This was the topic for my November Growth and Profits Club.

I started the workshop off by asking the Zoom round table to answer my ten innovation questions, which I featured in my October newsletter. The average score was 6 out of 10.

We then went on to look at some examples such as:

  • Weight Watchers, finding a way of controlling your intake of calories without counting calories
  • U-Haul, the American trailer rental company who size your house move and include the appropriate number of storage boxes in the trailer
  • Bosch circular saw has adjustable levers to make it easy to get common angles
  • Oracle profit logic software helps the retailer to set optimum sales prices
  • Kimberley Clark’s patient body temperature control
  • Nike running shoes sensor
  • Apple software automatic updates
  • 3M wound dressing that only sticks to itself not the patient’s skin.

We then looked at Job Mapping; each member chose an example customer to work on.

Job mapping is very different from process mapping because it concentrates on what your customer is trying to achieve, not what they are currently doing.

Two chose to concentrate on target customers, not existing ones, which, for them, was powerful.

The stages of Job Mapping are:

  1. Define – Set goals and plan
  2. Locate – Gather the items you need
  3. Prepare – Set up the job
  4. Confirm – Verify ready to start
  5. Execute – Carry out the job
  6. Monitor – Assess whether the job is being carried out successfully
  7. Improve – How can we improve the process?
  8. Conclude – Finish

Very few companies use the perspective of getting the job done to discover opportunities to customer centered innovation.

Growth and Profit Club

I am delighted to launch my new free Growth and Profit Club, running parallel with my Growth and Profit Coaching Group for Professionals.

We have all learned to use video and save travelling time so we will meet virtually, once a quarter, to discuss the things that really matter to you, learn new skills and experience business performance coaching for the first time.

Membership of my Growth and Profit Club will allow you to access other business leaders’ experience, knowledge and wisdom, and share your own, helping to develop the expertise and proficiency of everyone on the Zoom video call.

If you would like to discuss the challenges and opportunities for your business or would like to join my Growth and Profit Club, please contact me on  alan@mrwcs.com or phone 07860 813444.
