Customer Centered Innovation
As we have grappled with Covid, we have had to innovate the way we do business. As we make our plans for the future, what does innovation mean for you?
This was the topic for my November Growth and Profits Club.
I started the workshop off by asking the Zoom round table to answer my ten innovation questions, which I featured in my October newsletter. The average score was 6 out of 10.
We then went on to look at some examples such as:
- Weight Watchers, finding a way of controlling your intake of calories without counting calories
- U-Haul, the American trailer rental company who size your house move and include the appropriate number of storage boxes in the trailer
- Bosch circular saw has adjustable levers to make it easy to get common angles
- Oracle profit logic software helps the retailer to set optimum sales prices
- Kimberley Clark’s patient body temperature control
- Nike running shoes sensor
- Apple software automatic updates
- 3M wound dressing that only sticks to itself not the patient’s skin.
We then looked at Job Mapping; each member chose an example customer to work on.
Job mapping is very different from process mapping because it concentrates on what your customer is trying to achieve, not what they are currently doing.
Two chose to concentrate on target customers, not existing ones, which, for them, was powerful.
The stages of Job Mapping are:
- Define – Set goals and plan
- Locate – Gather the items you need
- Prepare – Set up the job
- Confirm – Verify ready to start
- Execute – Carry out the job
- Monitor – Assess whether the job is being carried out successfully
- Improve – How can we improve the process?
- Conclude – Finish
Very few companies use the perspective of getting the job done to discover opportunities to customer centered innovation.
