Developing your Team
A key part of your duty as a responsible employer is to develop your people. Roles rarely remain static because the business is evolving all the time and your team need to contribute fully to the success you are creating.
I suggest that a good way to do this is to look at the competencies required for each current role and looking forward, the competencies for their future role. This of course requires you to plan their future roles and the skills they will need.
The question is then how we upskill our people. That is given for the technical aspect of their work but what about stand out skills and soft skills like how to deal with customers.
Another key ingredient in your success is your culture. Create a culture you believe in, and they trust.
It’s about how you treat people and how they respond. If you treat your team like adults, they will behave as such.
My solution to developing your team is Group coaching sessions supplemented by individual coaching sessions to address the gaps and ensure timely progress.
At the same time building a culture of continuous improvement. So, every eight week project cycle things are getting better as at the same time you are investing in your people.
Use technology to the full because it releases your people to do what people do best that is analyses, interpret, solve problems and relate to other people.
Remember there is one thing worse than training up your people and them leaving and that is not training them up and they stay.
